About SSAFA

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, provides lifetime support to serving men and women, veterans and military families in need.

Our commitment to the Armed Forces Community

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, intrinsically understands the military community due to its work supporting veterans, serving personnel and their families. It offers a diverse workforce and extensive learning and development opportunities.

SSAFA's recruitment process 'Fair Recruit' uses skills-based, predictive questions to allow candidates to demonstrate transferable skills, removing bias. This allows service leavers and veterans to showcase their abilities. Identifying information is anonymous until interview.

SSAFA helps thousands of veterans yearly through charitable services and volunteering opportunities, especially casework. Its mentor programme aids transition to civilian life. The 'Friendly to Forces' campaign asks companies to commit to equal ex-forces recruitment, adding signatories to SSAFA's mentoring database.

SSAFA appreciates the transferable skills and civilian employment journey of service leavers. It advertises roles with the CTP and Forces Families Jobs, attends transition events, and offers varied entry-level roles. Salaries start around £20k+ and flexible working is available from day one.

The reservist policy includes 10 extra days paid leave for training. Managers accommodate training commitments where possible. SSAFA grants unpaid leave for mobilisation, with continuity of employment and reinstatement where feasible. Reservists will never be dismissed due to military duties.

SSAFA supports spouses through charitable services and promoting overseas roles to provide opportunities. It works alongside the Military Wives Choir to alleviate isolation and improve wellbeing through singing.

A culture of continuous learning addresses needs at all levels through internal/external programmes, e-learning, coaching, knowledge sharing and team development. Employees complete professional training and mandatory training. SSAFA helps develop skills and knowledge from leadership to customer service.

In summary, SSAFA's purpose is supporting the armed forces community, so it intrinsically understands veterans' needs. From unbiased recruitment to development opportunities, SSAFA values veterans' skills and supports transition to civilian roles.
