Our commitment to the Armed Forces Community
As a 160-year leader in transport solutions, Siemens Mobility values veterans, employing over 100 in the UK. The Military 2 Rail Programme provides railway engineering career opportunities through paid 6-week pre-employment training.
With UK facilities and over 5,000 staff, Siemens Mobility delivers rail technology including digital signalling, electrification, rolling stock and customer services. Projects include East Coast Main Line upgrades, Elizabeth Line systems, Thameslink digital trains and new London tube trains.
The Military 2 Rail Programme runs at least annually, sometimes twice yearly. Up to 12 veterans undertake a paid 6-week programme before becoming employees. Expenses are covered and roles across the business are agreed following assessment centre interviews.
Success stories include an RAF veteran becoming a signalling test engineer, continually developing and planning a long-term career. An Army veteran is now a health and safety advisor, overcoming early challenges and gaining confidence from the programme to focus on his career and family.
Veterans typically lack railway knowledge but offer transferable skills in networks, engineering and management. Salaries start around £35-50,000. Working patterns vary including office hours or 12-hour shift rotations. Benefits can include car/allowance, healthcare, gym discounts and more.
Ongoing development includes monthly ‘Growth Talks’ for reaching potential. Siemens Mobility recognises transition support needs, providing robust line management, training and pastoral care.
A new veterans network group offers support during the military transition phase.
In summary, Siemens Mobility values veterans, reflected in its Military 2 Rail Programme. Paid training and ongoing development provide rewarding engineering careers, despite initial lack of railway experience. Support aids transition to different working environments.
