Description
Find information and support about healthcare for serving personnel and mobilised reservists.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is responsible for providing general healthcare and some areas of specialist healthcare for most serving personnel and mobilised reservists.
If you are a non-mobilised reservist, you are likely to get support and treatment in the same way as a veteran. Healthcare for active-duty personnel and mobilized reservists is primarily provided by the Defence Medical Services (DMS), comprising the Royal Navy Medical Services, the Army Medical Services, the Royal Air Force Medical Services, and Headquarters DMS Group. This general care includes GP services, dentistry, occupational medicine, and community mental health services.
If individuals cannot access DMS services due to distance from a military medical center, they can temporarily register with NHS GP services for up to 3 months while maintaining their DMS GP as their primary provider. NHS services are available for emergencies, out-of-hours care, and specialist treatment referrals as determined by the DMS GP. Additionally, the Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) can assist with day-to-day needs and unit liaison while in the UK.
In the case of serious injuries from military operations or medical emergencies necessitating specialist care, individuals return to the UK for treatment, with the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) in Birmingham serving as the primary center. Routine specialist treatment, rehabilitation services through Primary Care Rehabilitation Facilities (PCRFs) and Regional Rehabilitation Units (RRUs), and non-urgent hospital care in England are also available for serving personnel. Pregnancy and fertility support resources are provided for armed forces personnel and their families.
