Description
The Veterans' Self-Build Scheme, initiated in 1991 by Alabaré, addresses homelessness by providing suitable accommodation and support for those in need. This involves equipping them with necessary skills and training to rebuild their lives independently. Initially known as the Community Self-Build Agency and established in the late 1980s, the program aids homeless and vulnerable individuals in constructing their own residences. In 2019, it merged with Alabaré and evolved into the Veterans' Self-Build Scheme, focusing solely on assisting tri-service veterans. Over 178 self-build projects have been completed across the UK, generating over 1200 housing units for disadvantaged community members. Notable projects like the Nelson Project in Plymouth have received awards. Collaborating with housing developers and providers, the program facilitated the transition of six veteran self-builders into homes in Leominster, Herefordshire in 2020. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, progress was made on projects like the Plymouth Stirling Project (2021), comprising 25 affordable rental homes, including units built by former service personnel. Another endeavor, the Drummond Park scheme in Ludgershall (2022), is expected to yield up to 15 new homes for individuals and veteran families over five years. Applications are being accepted for both the Ludgershall and Plymouth projects. Additional information can be found through provided links.
