Description
A Disabled Facilities Grant from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) assists in adapting the home of a person with a disability based on the recommendation of an occupational therapist. Owner occupiers, landlords, or private tenants with a disabled resident in the house can apply for this grant. The grant can only be used for works recommended by the local occupational therapist, unless otherwise agreed by the local health trust and NIHE. Typical work includes improving access to bathrooms, living rooms, or bedrooms, adding extra bathroom facilities, making food preparation easier, adapting lighting or heating controls, and improving heating systems. The grant amount depends on the approved work cost and financial circumstances, with a maximum of £25,000 or possibly up to £50,000 in some cases. Other work costs are not covered by the grant. To apply, contact the local Health and Social Services Trust, your GP, or social worker. The Housing Executive grants office can provide assistance, especially for the elderly or those with special needs. Work should not start without approval from the Housing Executive, and payments are made upon completion of work and acceptance by the Occupational Therapist and the Housing Executive. Various types of grants are available, and further details can be obtained from NIHE.
