The Beacon: Providing Housing For Homeless Single Veterans
Description
The Beacon is a facility that provides supported housing for single veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and have specific needs. Located at Catterick Garrison, it focuses on helping veterans transition to civilian life successfully.
The Beacon offers short-term accommodation (up to 18 months) and assists residents in developing independent living skills. It has four main areas of activity: developing independent living skills, promoting health and well-being, providing training and education for employment, and aiding the transition to independent housing. The Beacon offers round-the-clock staffing, various support plans, help in maximizing income, engagement with specialised services, engaging activities, and a gateway to training and employment.
The goal is to achieve outcomes such as independent tenancy maintenance, improved work readiness and mental/physical health, reduced substance dependency, enhanced social support, and a successful transition to civilian life. Veterans can stay at The Beacon for up to 18 months, receiving planned support before transitioning to independent living in the community. Referrals for assistance can be made through the form provided.
