Description
Care after Combat Volunteer Mentors are a proven and critical resource. They support our service users by working with them to change their situation by breaking damaging, recurring behaviours and helping them through their journey to what will hopefully be a crime free life. Volunteer Mentors work with the service user from 12 months prior to release, developing a relationship based on trust, then addressing the individual’s needs to prepare them for integration back into the community with a renewed purpose, self-esteem and taking responsibility for shaping their own future. The Mentor will continue to work with the service user, ‘through the prison gate’, and up to 12 months post release or, until such time as the individual is confident, and their needs are met. Throughout the process, the Mentor will engage with other services mandated to support the individual. The role of Volunteer Mentor is challenging, but hugely rewarding. The results achieved due to the dedication and perseverance of both Mentor and service user are often dramatic and life changing. The significant reduction in reoffending rates amongst veterans who have been mentored by Care after Combat is a clear indicator of the success of this scheme.
