Description
Enhance your children’s rights approach to meet attainment needs of pupils from armed forces communities
Young people from armed forces and veteran families have told us that they feel the professionals in their lives don’t always understand the lives they lead and that this can impact education and learning, mental health and wellbeing and so much more.
We believe that in understanding the lives of these children and young people better, professionals will be equipped to offer the right support at the right time and will be conscious of experiences or dynamics that may impact the child.
To help educators and professionals understand the unique lives of children and young people from the armed forces community, we have developed a learning offer with a range of methods for learning about forces life and how it can impact education and learning, mental health and wellbeing, and much more.
Face-to-face Training Sessions
We can provide face-to-face training sessions on a range of themes relevant to the lives of children and young people from armed forces and veteran families. We can deliver face-to-face training sessions for you and your colleagues or you can attend our annual training sessions across Scotland.
Online Learning Sessions
We host online learning sessions throughout the year that focus on different topics pertinent to the lives of children and young people from armed forces and veteran families. Each session provides contextual information on the chosen theme, evidence from young people, and research, and invite an independent expert to contribute their knowledge to the discussion. Instead of training, these learning sessions create safe, non-judgemental spaces to discuss practice and consider how to implement policy more effectively.
Learning Resources
We co-produce a range of offline and online resources with children and young people from armed forces and veteran families, that can be used to educate civilian peers and colleagues, or as a tool to develop your own practice to meet their unique support needs.
About Forces Children Scotland
Supporting children and young people from armed forces and veteran families
From mental health and wellbeing services, youth forums, and residential experiences to standing up for children's rights, helping others to understand forces life, providing financial support, and much more.
Our charity was founded just four days before the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Today, we deliver a broad range of work to support over 13,000 children and young people from armed forces communities. As a strengths-based and children's rights-focused organisation, we are committed to working directly with this community, and wider partners to co-produce our projects, services, and campaigns to celebrate the positives and overcome many unique challenges associated with forces life.
We strive to achieve our vision of making Scotland a place where all children & young people from armed forces communities can feel heard, understood, and empowered to overcome unique challenges. We want them to dream big and pursue positive futures.
We work with this community to co-produce projects, services, and campaigns
Co-producing our projects, services, and campaigns promotes human rights and proves highly effective in fostering a sense of ownership, empowerment, and confidence amongst children and young people.
By getting involved, children and young people feel listened to and know their contributions are valued to deliver innovative, relevant, tailored, and effective outputs to meet unique support needs. Moreover, they have told us that it has helped them develop a stronger affinity with our charity and valuable transferrable skills, including problem-solving, decision-making, and teamwork that have strengthened future opportunities through personal statements and CVs.
