When Chris Sweetman left the Army, he didn’t expect to stay in one job for over two decades. But at Grundon, he found more than just a job – he found a career that valued his military skills and gave him a role with purpose.
From Cavalry to Career Growth
Chris joined the British Army at 16, spending 10 years in various roles – from working with horses in the Cavalry Recovery Blues and Royals Regiment, working with armoured vehicles to training in signals, mechanics, and maintenance, Chris also obtained his HGV Licence. His final 18 months saw him recruiting new Army talent, a role that strengthened his leadership and people skills.
Finding a Forces-Friendly Employer
Leaving the Army can be daunting, but for Chris, an agency placement led him to Grundon – one of the UK’s leading waste management companies. He started as an LGV Driver but didn’t stop there. 26 years later, he’s now an Airport Supervisor, managing waste operations at the UK’s largest airport.
How the Military Prepared Him for Success
Chris credits his Army background for shaping his work ethic and career progression. He says:
“Timekeeping, people skills, and working independently – these are all things I learned during my time in the Army, and they’ve been crucial in my career at Grundon.”
Why Veterans and Military Spouses Thrive at Grundon
Grundon isn’t just hiring veterans – they’re actively seeking out military talent because they recognise the value of discipline, teamwork, and adaptability. They also provide opportunities for military spouses, offering careers that fit around family and forces life.
Chris’ Advice to Fellow Veterans
"Go in open-minded. Civilian workplaces aren’t as regimented as the Army, and that can be a culture shock. But give it 110% and everything will work out."
